I don’t know how many Oppo’s have any experience with web development but at my work I’m developing a new website for my work as a side thing because by trade I’m really more of a OO programmer and database dev. Any way I just wanted to rant about my hate ... for Internet Explorer.... I spent all day developing this cool little web app that will give you live pricing and guess what. It works on every browser under the sun .. BUT IE.

Any other oppo’s code on here ?

not even Microsoft likes IE anymore, thus “Edge.” which has its own issues, natch.

but I’m having trouble finding a web browser worth using anymore. Firefox is behind in security, IE is deprecated, Edge is immature, and Chrome is a bloated operating system masquerading as a web browser.

I use C#, Autoit, VBA and powershell at work.

I hate java.

I use c# at work for a lot of my backend stuff because its all ASP.Net I like c# and I can understand the hate for Java. My first language was java, and I really don’t want to go back if I don’t need to lol

Yeah well at my work we have a software as a service via a browser. And we don’t even know if it works on edge yet because its still basically IE in my opinion. It could get good but Microsoft will hold it back from being what it could be. I use Firefox for most development things. I like Chrome for the features but it is heavy as hell. At work I use Chrome / FF but at home I use Safari and Chrome if I can help it

I already know I’ll get abuse for Safari but I really like it for at home

Literally the worst... “Hey you’re a software guy, you can just whip up a website right?” Yeah, sure my web dev experience consists of freshman year intro cs classes going for broad exposure

Literally that’s exactly what happened. I was having a slow week at work. And all the marketing people were like we need a new website and they were like, oh hes fresh out of school hes got this. They asked and I said I’d give it a shot. I took one HTML class like 4 years ago. And I mean the site looks good in my opinion its just funny since I’m teaching myself all of it

I’m still in school and all my work experience has been at tech companies with management that understands my skill set but especially for Entrepreneurship(my minor) classes, where we usually need to develop a product, or at least conceptually make something realistic, everyone else(almost exclusively business majors) seem to think I’m a walking encyclopedia for anything tech related, especially when it’s time to build a team for a project based class. I tell most of them to go use Squarespace or something for their website because that’s usually all they want. I am working on an app with someone because I liked his idea and it’s somewhere I actually have experience and interest.

Wow, usually this site is used to distract me from programming, not to rant about it hahaha.

Light coding here, but plenty of experience trying to make websites (mostly WordPress) behave in certain ways and look nice for people. I’ve taken some coding and CSS classes and it’s basically like, OK for everything BUT IE, do this. For IE you have to add all these little extra things. Oh and it will change next week/month/year.

Don’t get me started on trying to format a mass email that will look nice on all devices/clients.

Yeah I do the same thing, most websites I tell people its just easier to do one of the templated hosted solutions, but in the case of the one I am doing for my work, they want it to be a portal to our software as a service and there is a lot of custom things they want built do I went the route of just developing it on my own.

I did a static 3-language website for a bike rent, from the ground up after realizing Joomla was a sticky mess. Man, fuck IE.

Yeah man I hate IE. And dealing with site compatibility is pretty new to me so like I put probably an 8 hour day into making this thing work right and then I fin out I need to rework a bunch of it because IE

No that’s what I’m doing when I get into work today. I’m working from home right now so I don’t feel like trying to hit the dev server over the VPN

You know what has actually kind of worked, is using tables to lay out the content if you really want to have multiple columns. That’s a no-no of modern web development but it works for email. Because Outlook. Mostly.

Yeah tables is hella old... But even the newest outlooks underpinnings are old too so I can see why it works

Why support ie? That’s our solution at work. You’d have to be an idiot to use it. It doesn’t have high market share anymore, particularly the older versions. The newer ones aren’t as bad.

Kinja'd!!! TDIGuy > Nauraushaun

We want to support IE for some reason. If it was me, I’d do the same

So did we. Down to IE8 because that’s what some clients were using.

Then we realized how much work we were sinking into it, and how many bugs/features we had to drop because it was taking so much time. So we stopped.

These people are idiots. In our case it’s big organizations that can’t move to a new piece of software without doing a long and costly risk assessment, so they stay with software that’s disgustingly out of date and full of invulnerabilities. They’re using unsafe software to avoid risk.
Frankly, if you’re using a 12-month old version of Chrome you’re putting yourself at too much risk, let alone a 6 year old IE.
